Corcoran Department of History
Carter G. Woodson Institute for African American and African Studies

Andrew Kahrl's teaching and research focuses on the relationship between housing, real estate, and racial inequality in urban America.  His courses stress the local dimensions of larger issues shaping America’s past and present, and aim to provide opportunities for students to engage in local civic affairs and research.  He previously co-taught the community and civic engagement course “All Politics Is Local.”  In this year-long course, students conducted extensive study and investigations into local government and politics in Charlottesville and worked closely with local groups and organizations to better understand and address social and economic problems affecting the city.   Mapping Inequality link Course: All Politics Is Local Woodson Institute faculty profile
