School of Nursing

Epstein teaches ethics and pharmacology at the UVA School of Nursing. She was part of a group recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet designation team for a health system-wide Moral Distress Consult Service for healthcare professionals. She also studied the impact of a high-tech device connecting parents with their infants and caregivers in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This technology has since been adopted at UVA and beyond. The Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) selected Epstein for its 2020 Grenvik Family Award for Ethics, which recognizes an SCCM member’s efforts to address significant ethical problems in critical care and promotes humanistic values. She is also a core member of the faculty of the Center for Health Humanities and Ethics, and leads the Moral Distress Consultation Collaborative (MDCC), an interprofessional, multi-institutional community of leaders in moral distress consultation.
