Bethany Teachman

Professor and Director of Clinical Training
Department of Psychology

Bethany Teachman serves as Director of the Program for Anxiety, Cognition, and Treatment (PACT) research lab at UVA, which investigates cognitive processes that contribute to the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders and other forms of emotion dysregulation. PACT focuses on how thoughts, including those that occur outside of our conscious control, contribute to anxiety and avoidance, and how we can change thinking styles to improve emotional functioning. The program aims to shift anxious thinking by using technologies like mobile apps and web-based cognitive bias modification programs. These technologies help increase access to evidence-based interventions, thereby addressing common obstacles to treatment access, such as cost, transportation, and stigma involved in seeking mental health treatment. Dr. Teachman is also Co-Director of UVA TYDE: Thriving Youth in a Digital Environment, a new university-wide initiative to advance research on digital technologies to support youth mental health.
