Dr. Irène P. Mathieu is a board-certified, practicing primary care pediatrician at UVA. She also serves as principal investigator of the WAYS Lab, which is devoted to improving the socio-emotional health of all children through community-partnered research on mental and behavioral health disparities and their solutions. Dr. Mathieu has conducted mixed-methods and community-engaged research in Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and Virginia and Tennessee in the USA. She also serves as Assistant Director of the Program in Health Humanities in the School of Medicine. In this capacity, she created and runs the Health Equity & Justice Fellowship.

The award-winning author of four poetry collections, Dr. Mathieu brings a critical linguistic perspective to qualitative data analysis. Her child health equity work extends to media appearances and advocacy writing in publications on immigration policy, climate change, and early childhood education. Her writing and advocacy work have been featured in the Washington Post, LA Times, Richmond Magazine, National Public Radio, and more.
