Karen McGlathery is director of UVA’s Environmental Institute, a hub of environmental resilience and sustainability research that connects faculty, students, and citizens to create solutions for a more equitable, resilient, and sustainable future. Prof. McGlathery also serves as lead PI of the Virginia Coast Reserve Long-Term Ecological Research Project on Virginia’s eastern shore and the Eastern Shore of Virginia Climate Equity Project. Her research group focuses on the ecological effects of climate change in shallow coastal systems, carbon sequestration in seagrass meadows as natural climate solutions, and the role of coastal ecosystems in protecting communities against the impacts of climate change.
